Antigua is located in the middle of the Leeward Islands in the eastern Caribbean, roughly 17 degrees north of the equator. It is the largest of the Leeward Islands with a population of approximately 68,000. The island has a glorious climate with temperatures ranging from mid-seventies in the winter to mid-eighties in the summer, its annual rainfall averages at a mere 45 inches, making it the sunniest of all the Caribbean islands and a delightful holiday destination.
Throughout history Antigua’s unique features have been widely observed; its warm steady winds, complex coastline of safe harbours and protective, practically unbroken wall of coral reef attracted Lord Horatio Nelson in 1784, he noted it was the perfect place to hide a fleet and so Antigua became Great Britain’s most important Caribbean base. Over 200 years later little did Lord Nelson know that the same characteristics that attracted him and his Royal Navy would transform Antigua into one of the Caribbean’s premier tourist destinations.
The same signs exist today, but they have different uses and appeals. The trade winds that would once have blown British Soldiers safely into the English harbour now fuel one of the world’s foremost maritime events – ‘Sailing Week,’ which draws tourists, keen sailor’s and sport lovers from far and wide. The expansive winding coastline that made Antigua incredibly difficult for outsiders to navigate their way around is where todays hikers, trekkers and those looking for active and adventure filled holidays encounter an enormous wealth of secluded, powdery soft beaches. The coral reefs, once the bane of invading enemy ships, now attract snorkelers and scuba divers from all over the world; they are arguably some of the most beautiful in the Caribbean.
Antigua is home to 365 white and pink sand beaches, gloriously vast and relaxing but offering adventure and excitement for those wanting a more active holiday.
This unique island has much to offer its vacationers; it has been ranked as the best island for celeb spotting by ‘Caribbean Travel and Life Magazine.’ It has crystal clear and turquoise waters and is sunny and warm all year round with soothing trade winds. For food lovers it has many local restaurants offering authentic mouth-watering Caribbean cuisine and when thirsty why not try one of the refreshing tropical concoctions, using Antigua’s own cavalier Rum and the famous sweet black pineapple.
For those vacationers looking for pure relaxation, unique Caribbean treatments at luxury spas on the island will guide you on the path to ultimate relaxation. If on the other hand, spa style relaxing is the last thing you want to be doing on holiday there are plenty of other things to choose from. Sport and adventure lovers can try out scuba diving, boating, fishing and many other activities whilst shopaholics wile away the hours taking advantage of duty free!
Antigua also has much cultural heritage including an annual carnival celebration and a fierce devotion to cricket and for nature lovers there are natural wonders aplenty including the rainforest, frigate bird sanctuary and Devil’s bridge.
Antigua truly does have something for everyone, and is the ultimate Caribbean destination – what better way to explore this enchanting destination than from a delightful and exclusive villa?
