If you are looking for the ultimate relaxing and nautical vacation then Tortola is for you; it is a gem amongst the British Virgin Islands and a world renowned key yachting stop.

As a Caribbean isle it is far from ordinary; its first inhabitants were pirates such as Blackbeard and Captain Kidd who allegedly marooned a number of their men on the island. Later, during the 17th century the English established a permanent plantation colony on Tortola and for over 150 years the sugar cane industry dominated its history. It diminished in the mid-19th century following the abolition of slavery and now the isle is a glorious hub of vacationers and home makers taking advantage of the glorious weather, idyllic beaches and laid back atmosphere.

There are endless ways to experience the beauty of Tortola. Swim or stroll along the white-sand beaches, explore ancient ruins, taste the delectable local cuisine or drop anchor and rock with the rhythm of the azure ocean.  In Tortola, the largest island of the BVI chain, there are a variety of Caribbean vacation activities to indulge in and something for everyone.

Tortola is ringed with a series of perfect white beaches, all thinly populated, well-kept and sloping down into some of the best reefs in the Caribbean.  Here you will find incredible swimming and snorkelling opportunities in the blue waters, hidden underwater passages between anemones and sponges and the darting figures of colourful tropical fish. You may swim with sea skates, or observe flying fish, dolphins and even a few whales from the deck of the rentable ships.
For those wanting to shop you can find everything from local spices, jams, rums and soaps to handcrafted jewellery and silk-screened fabrics. Local art can be found on Main Street in the capital city of Road Town.

If you are after a taste of Caribbean culture, there are plenty of bars where you can hear local fungi music; named after a popular local dish this blend of African and European style music incorporates unique melodies, dance and BVI oral history.
For food lovers on holiday in Tortola, eating local delicacies such as fresh lobster, conch, spicy goat curries, Johnny Cakes and West Indian roti are a must. After a day relaxing in the glorious sun you can indulge in a four-star dinner at a converted sugar mill or a quaint meal in a pastel-painted cottage.

With something for everyone Tortola is a truly magnificent Caribbean holiday destination.
